I have been native in Springfield since I was little toddler. Now, I'm living in Nixa. It just occurred to me why we are not getting any High-rise buildings since 80'. I would LOVE to get facts on this and I have been researching on it, wouldn't get out of it anything. I would love to hear from you guys on this one...Thanks.

I was down in Springfield from 1990 to 1994 acquiring a city planning degree at MSU. I believe that the Hammons Tower (the black one) was completed in 1987. Downtown was a pretty desolate place back in that time. So much focus was down on Battlefield road at the time that there was very little interest in doing anything downtown. I'm so glad that all changed. The last time I visited back in 08, there were all kinds of things going on. That was 10 years ago. I'm sure there's much more going on, now. I do recall that there was a proposal for a hotel to go up near the Hammons Tower that might have become the tallest, but that was quite a few years ago, and I believe that those plans fell through. Although I would like to see some new stuff going up that might enhance the skyline, I'm glad for the current projects taking place. Your central business district is much stronger now.

Yes, Springfield has fallen behind when it comes to taller buildings. I too would like to see more height in the city’s skyline. But apparently there isn’t a current need for that kind of office or residential space. Could it be that much of the region’s investment dollars have been poured into Branson?

All four of the tallest buildings in Springfield were vanity projects - three by the late John Q. Hammonds (residential condo, hotel, and office building) and one by his competitor Lee Mclean (hotel). The condo project ultimately failed and is now a dorm for SMS. The office building has always suffered from low occupancy in spite of John Q. renting multiple floors to his accounting firm. The hotels have done ok, I suppose.
