I was born and raised in Southwest Missouri and, yes, chili and cinnamon rolls are commonly served together. I am getting close to 40 and I still remember being in elementary and one of my favorite school lunches was exactly this....chili was NEVER served without a cinnamon roll with it. Now did/do I dip it in the chili...NO!

If you believe wikipedia there are still places in the world (not counting Jeffry Dahmer's former neighborhood, that is) where you don't want your kids wandering too far off the beaten path lest they become the main course. Given that, I suppose putting chili and a cinnamon roll together doesn't sound all that bad!

Whoever told you we DIP our cinnamon rolls in our chili is crazy. Not that I think nobody does it, but it is not typical. Cinnamon rolls are for dessert - after chili. Funny, I was just getting online to see if there was some historical 'reason' we eat cinnamon rolls and chili, and here I find out that it is a truly local thing with no significant reason or purpose. With what I've read on various websites, my guess is it is something that got started with the school nutrition services. They did it once or twice and it was popular, thereby becoming a permanent menu, and we all just kind of learned to expect chili and cinnamon rolls together. Even our Runza restaurants picked up on it years ago and it is a seasonal favorite. Either way, yummy!

I've lived in Kansas City my entire life. We used to have a chain of restaurants here called Dixon's Chili. They served chili with some of the most incredible, homemade cinnamon rolls I've ever had. They were in business here for almost 40 years and disappeared about 15 or 20 years ago. I think the owner died and his children decided to close the restaurants.

Cinnamon rolls and chili do go together well, but cornbread in nice too.
