I sort of got tickled today...I was catching up on 2 months worth of CD posts today and found that we have discussions about Trader Joe's in all sorts of unrelated posts. So..it seems appropriate that we have a thread for the subject.

As LJ has said, some of us do "runs" to St. Louis for TJ's (I personally also hit Nordies, Einsteins bagels, The SmokeHouse, and DSW for shoes...like I need more).

There are four stores in the St. Louis area:

Brentwood
48 Brentwood Promenade Court

Chesterfield
1679 Clarkson Road

Creve Coeur
11505 Olive Blvd.

Des Peres
13343 Manchester Rd.

The last time I was in St. Louis (April) they indicated that a store was going to open in the Kansas City area but didn't know exactly where/when.
I've heard there is one in Tulsa but it's on listed on their website.

They did confirm that they require an area that will support multiple stores via population and income. This area may not be in their near future...but we know where to find 'em and we know how to keep asking.

Nope. No Trader Joe's in Tulsa. Unfortunately, I can't see TJ's ever going into OK unless OK changes its archaic liquor laws, and there's no sign of that happening anytime soon.

We will be moving to Missouri in a few months and cannot wait. BUT we are fearful for the lack of Trader Joe's wherever we move to! It's about the only thing we can think of (and believe me, we try) that we will miss about California.

That's wonderful you're going to be able to make this move--and welcome to the Missouri forums too! I live in Santa Rosa and was born and raised in the St. Louis area. My wife and I want to move to St. Joseph--or perhaps somewhere else in Missouri if an outstanding employment opportunity arises.

About Trader Joes: I daresay that depending on where you move back to in Missouri, the existing grocery stores will offset the lack of a Trader Joes. Maybe it's because I'm more used to Schnucks and Dierbergs, the two main St. Louis area grocery store chains. Kansas City and St. Joseph have Hy-Vee. Both KC and StL have Aldi, and St. Louis has Shop 'N Save, which have great bargains but are aimed at a much different demographic than Trader Joes.

Though Missouri taxes more groceries than California, it's not that much, and you're going to come out pretty significantly ahead at the checkout line. That's something to look forward to!

You'll find Cosco and Trader Joe's in St. Louisl

Folks who have never been to Trader Joes or Boney's do not understand what it is. TJ is not one more Scnuck's, Cub's, Kroger's, Dillon's. Von's, Sam's Walmart. Cosco, Consumer's, Albertson's, Ralph's or Food 4 Less knock off. .Yes, you can find some foods, beer and wine that are nearlly identical, and you can find some that are natural, but that is where the similarity ends. TJ's knows customers what we want and we get it. I like the white Belgian beer.

TJ's is the only grocery I can call and order two cases of laundry soap and it is waiting at the desk when I walk in the door, They are very happy to spend my money and they do it with class.

The reason I drive 300 miles for an $8 gallon of laundry soap is because I can't find it in a Springfield. Columbia, Joplin, KC, Tulsa, Fayetteville, or OKC. My choice was St. Louis. It still is. I think the fact they have TJ deliveries every day of the week to the Brentwood store is remarkable. Brentwood imho is the closest to 1-44.. Traffic is non-esistent early Sunday morning. Easy in and easy out. It's still an all day trip from Joplin and back.

That's an excellent reply! If and when we can ever get moved back to Missouri, we'll have to check out one of the Trader Joes in the St. Louis area and compare it to the two Trader Joes we have in Sonoma County, CA.

I don't know if you're a wine drinker, but I'm wondering if the St. Louis Trader Joes ever carr(y)(ied) "Two Buck Chuck," or Charles Shaw red wine that sells for only $2.00 a bottle. They do have some great wine specials!

Does this mean if we don't have a Trader Joe's in our community, we're safe from Californians?

I'll be happy to answer that question! The answer is no--you're not safe. Now....step slowly away from that SUV with your hands up, drop the keys on the ground, and walk slowly towards that zero-emissions mass transit station....there you go. Very good!

In all seriousness, I'm making a fearless guess that most Californians who want to move to Missouri (I was born and raised in the St. Louis area myself) have no desire at all to impose California's worst attributes on it. Trader Joe's on the other hand--there could be a good market for it in Branson and the Kansas City area!

The funny thing is one can actually buy a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) rated SUV now .
