Hello - looking for some advice. My better half and I absolutely fell for the St. George area. He has retired but I'm not ready to. We will be putting a couple of houses for sale next year and then will be purchasing a home in the Ivins area.

Does anyone have any thoughts on job prospects? I'm a CPA and while I will be asking my firm about the possibility of working remotely while living in St. George that may not be an option. Are there teaching opportunities at Dixie college? Casinos in Mesquite? I'll be looking for a position with healthcare benefits. Although too early for me to retire, we are ready to make this move!

Will I have trouble finding work because I'm not Mormon?

Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!

No trouble finding work because of non being Mormon. I'd suggest looking for CPA jobs for Intermountain Healthcare, Dixie State University, and other major employers in the area. Ivins is a nice place to live. I think the medical school there is almost open.

Also please be aware the St. George area will not provide the wages you are likely accustomed to. The area pays very low wages for most professions. An alternative, that a large amount of people in St. George do, is make the 2 hour drive to Las Vegas, for the better pay. It ends up being worth it.

I know that I personally, make $30 MORE per hour by working in LV, than I did when I was in St. George.

Thanks! I'll definitely keep that in mind. That may be an option as well since I have casino accounting in my background.

Yep, salaries for nurses are about $25. per hour higher in Las Vegas! Also firefighters...many work in Vegas but live in St. George! Living in Las Vegas not a really good option for most here....all the things that attract people to here are not in Las Vegas.

Vegas is a nice place to visit, but I certainly do not want to live there. Definitely something to consider - working there and making that drive.

For those that have done so, how often are there accidents in the gorge area that cause issues for drive time? Rare?

Yes crashes are relatively rare. Lately the biggest delays have been from the construction going on in there. I think that is approaching the finish date though. And there is always the alternative route through Ivins area to avoid the gorge and still get to LV.

That sounds insane to me to drive to Las Vegas five days a week from St. George. Must get tiring after a while. Would be okay if it were a train or bus where you could get work done.
