I'd avoid Jennings also, Fergeson does have a very nice lot of historic homes which are gorgeous, and on large lots, and the area is in a "transition", Jennings however is not (at least not yet). Old town florrisant is awesome, but it's very very small, and as such finding homes in a 4x4 block area can be somewhat difficult, the rest of florrisant isn't bad, i just have a thing for old town. I'm on the Southside of the airport, in St. Ann. There's numerous homes for decent prices, and often in pattonville schools which are considered to be a pretty decent district in the area.

St. Louis (the whole metro, not just downtown) is a fairly "car dependant" town. It's not rare for me and my wife to drive down to Soulard to hang out with a couple friends who live down there, but we're not huge on commuting everywhere. This board tends to be very pro-city which is cool, but just remember you'll have friends who live all over the metro area. I've got friends and coworkers in every corner of St. Louis, as far East as Scott AFB, and West towards Wentzville, North to Bellfountian Neighbors, South to Imperial.

Most of these friends find things to do around where they live, but it's not uncommon for us (or them) to drive to someone elses house for summer bar-b-ques, swim parties, drink fests, or head out to the nighclubs (the better ones will be within the city limits). You can find a local drinking whole in every community, sports events are downtown, but i think you can do equally as much in any location as you can in another.

My current local has me within walking distance of one of our city parks. Great to take the dog up there for walks, bike rides, or neighborhood conversing etc...During the summer, the public pool is open, along with the water slides, etc. If you're looking for an urban environment Fergeson isn't it, if you're looking for a working class suburban experience, it'll foot the bill. My wife and I were up in the FERG last week actually at the Whistle Stop, local ice cream and resturant, good time and nice custard. PS, St. Ann's got some good realestate for sale at decent prices too, much of it within the Pattonville school district (not a great district, but definately not towards the bottom of any tiers either).
