Checkout UrbanSTL.com. The forums over there are full of interesting people as well as a few influential urban-minded locals. For happenings around town be sure to bookmark the local alternative weekly's website riverfronttimes.com. They have a great local news blog, music blog, and restaurant blog. I also like stlbeacon.com for news over the awful daily paper we have here.

If you are outgoing and friendly then you will no problem meeting people. If you come off as snooty then people probably won't like you as much. This is a huge sports town (and no, not just baseball). This past summer during the world cup I had such a great time hanging out with fellow soccer fans. Hockey and football are huge here too, but enthusiasm for the Rams is pretty low these days as you noted. I suspect 9 out of 10 people here of either gender will be able to talk to you on a knowledgable level about sports. Baseball is definitely #1 though.

sauce magazine is one of the local foodie sites www.saucemag.com
RiverFront Times (rft) is the local funky/hip newspaper with all the concert event news www.riverfronttimes.com
Urbanstl will keep you up to date on all kinds of things real estate development www.urbanstl.com/forum (http://www.urbanstl.com/forum - broken link)

Metromix also has good updates on things going on around town

You'll soon find out that there are way more things going on around town than you could ever attend.

If you like the Demun neighborhood. My neighborhood, the moorlands, is just to the west.

Honestly, if you're new to town, I can't emphasize enough how great it is to live downtown on washington avenue in a building with a common area/pool/party room. It makes NOT meeting new people IMPOSSIBLE.

Easily the Central West End if you are going to rent. I lived there for 5 years and worked in Creve Coeur. It took me about 25 minutes to get to work but a little longer to get home. I would still be living in the CWE if we could have afforded a house there. The CWE and downtown are the only truly walkable neighborhoods in STL for everything (grocery/banks/restaurants/etc.). Some of South City fits the mold as well but it will be more family themed then trendy. Downtown does have some things going for it but the CWE always has been the most lively place after working hours. It definitely fits being the hippest/trendiest place in STL that you are looking for.
