I know one is a neighborhood of St Louis where as the other is a separate municipality and technically in Illinois, but how does the crime and poverty compare in these two areas? Is North St Louis a ghost town in the same sense that East St Louis is? Do these two communities have the same feel or is their definite differences? If so, what are these differences?

East St. Louis, ILLINOIS is an eastern suburb of St. Louis. It is literally just a ghetto, ghost town.

North St. Louis is the northside of St. Louis city. Although most of it is pretty crime ridden and ghetto, there are a fair amount of solid, middle class areas.

East St Louis is a dangerous town. The only area of that city where I'd ever step foot is the casino, and that's basically during the daytime.
North St Louis, on the other hand, has a mixture of neighborhoods, some good and some bad. I'd have no qualms about walking down the street at night in some neighborhoods. But the Fairgrounds Park area isn't one of them.

Hmm, when i hear people talk about the crime and slums in North St Louis, are they referring to a particular area? Ive heard Baden is dangerous, but I'm not exactly sure what or where Baden is.

Generally speaking East STL doesn't have anything other than a casino and some strip clubs that might interest someone to go there. Its generally considered dangerous enough that some of the cops stop by and tell people to be safe while coming out of the casino.

North side STL except for some areas is generally alright during day time but my friends once lost their way around there at night and had 3 police cars escort them out till they get to the interstate.

Why do you care? All your posts are about asking about crime in different areas, are you doing a research paper or something? If that is the case, you might want to do some real research, not asking people on a forum.

Are there any strip clubs in East St. Louis... The popular ones are in Sauget and Brooklyn. Also do not confuse EStL with the entire metro east.

There is nothing in E StL. Crime there seems highly over hyped. I'm sure it's mostly because the population is small and there is not a lot of normal economic activity so the stats are high. But I have always found E StL is be more deserted than crime ridden. That said, with it being so isolated, there is no reason to be there and you can become a target if wondering around aimlessly.

The N side of StL City is more integrated into the city and metro of StL. It has higher crime, but again, not as bad as people make it out to be. Some areas are bad, but most areas are ok at least during the daytime while there are a lot of people passing through the area etc.

As with any higher crime urban area, I think most of the violent crime effects those that are involved in drugs, gangs etc. If you go into N StL City or E StL IL looking for prostitutes, drugs etc, then you have a great chance of becoming a part of some crime stat somewhere while there driving up overall crime stats. While the normal people conducting normal business and living normal lives can live in many parts of these well known crime ridden areas and have few if any problems.

E StL is too far gone and too far isolated though. Like I said, it's nothing more than an intimidating urban ghost town IMO and a very small part of metro east overall.

Crime in ESL isn't hyped; it's real and it's rampid. This is from Wikipedia East St. Louis, Illinois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"East Saint Louis and Opa Locka, Florida have the highest crime rates in the United States (Opa Locka had the absolute highest crime rate in 2003 and 2004 for cities of any population.)"

The article includes a table showing crime rates in ESL vs. the national average. Here are a few stats (2006 figures, crimes per 100,000):

murder, 101.9 vs. 5.6
rape, 251.3 vs 32.2
robbery, 1347.0 vs. 195.4
assault, 5847.3 vs. 340.1

Bottom line: ESL is more dangerous than almost every other city in America, including notable crime "hot spots" such as Gary Indiana, Compton California, Camden NJ, Detroit and New Orleans.

Try to be nice, now. Here's a sentence from one of biggspc's posts in another thread:
"Im currently a college student majoring in anthropology and economics with a minor in east asian studies."
The subjects of anthropology and crime can and do overlap. My assumption is that crime is a key area of interest for biggspc.
