Yikes! That's a new one to me. If they could only catch these guys setting arson fires they wouldn't be going anywhere. Hard times and desperate measures; thieves and arsonists are scum.

Not very favorable national press. OMG makes us look like Detroit. Why did it take the NY times to report this. Where is the local media?

Sad to say but St. Louis does not have a very good national reputation.

Yes, you seem very sad to say it.

It depends in which circles. Yes we have a stupid reputation as being dangerous. But mention St. Louis on a forum full of urban minded people (such as skycraper pages) and many will vault St. Louis as one of Americas classic architectural wonders. In the realm of sports St. Louis is a very important city. Culturally, we are vastly underrated but I can see how people who aren't familiar with our symphony and wonderful fox theatre may think of us as culturally behind.

To just make a blanket statement about having a bad reputation is very disingenuous.

The NY Times, in an effort to garner new readership outside of their traditional zones, has taken to writing a lot of regional stories (and trend stories -- my God, the ridiculous trend stories!)

St. Louis has been on the good side of that with some rather favorable press at times, and some obviously not so favorable press at other times. If the cruz of the article is accurate, then I don't see much to get upset over.

Anyone who's spent time in any major city knows that each has blighted areas. If it makes New Yorkers feel good to pat their own backs about how awesome they are, then let them be.

When I read the thread title I anticipated it to be a metaphorical phrase. This is just funny and pathetic at the same time.

Reminds me of the movie "Lord of War" where a plane force-lands in a remote area of Africa and the people disassemble and steal away every single scrap of it within the span of an hour.

Ummm, unfortunately, we are very much like Detroit, hopefully on a lesser scale. 8,000 vacant homes and 11,000 vacant lots.
