Let's hope...

Several recent deals, including a new software center that Unisys opened downtown, may help St. Louis become a regional hub for computer software and data-center companies, The New York Times reports. St. Louis' lack of commercial companies actually attracts data center operators, because the city’s power grid remains from the time downtown was dominated by large warehouse and industrial companies, and has excess capacity.

That's great news. This should provide a lot of opportunities.

Very interesting article. It's nice to see us leveraging disadvantages and making them advantages.

But perhaps someoine who knows better can fill me in, but what kinds of jobs are being created? I don't think of storage as necessarily something that would require a lot of employees, white-collar professionals in specific.

I could see white collar jobs coming with a data center. The storage would be electronic information, server space, backup systems, etc...the folks who operate and maintain those systems typically are both well trained, and well paid. Another point, jobs are jobs...if it was the hustler club moving in down the street, i might throw a bit of a fit, but in this case neglected, outdated, and vacant buildings are being turned into viable, revenue producing, companies which will undoubtedly help in any revivals that are going to take place in downtown St. Louis.

Another advantage is the very high ceilings found in most of the buildings.
Most servers farms have elevated flooring for cooling, wiring, etc.

STL is blessed in this sense, that is for sure. If you are looking for a colo or hosted solutions STL has a lot of excellent choices. We use Xiolink and Cybercon but have used Hosterian and Datotel in the past.
