It was reported that the marshal had died, but that was rescinded and he is still in critical condition as of 5pm this evening.

Good to hear, hope he hangs on. While i don't like to see anything end this way, at least the criminal won't have any other opportunities to shoot at anymore officers. It's always messed up though, when a neighborhood would prefer the potential "drug dealer" living there, rather than the police coming to arrest him...and then have issue against the police for being there in the first place...boggles my mind.

No kidding! Such a shame. I'm glad to hear that the marshal didn't die. I, too, hope he makes it!

This year has been pretty bad in terms of crime so far in St Louis. I wouldn't be surprised if the homicide count exceeds last year's within 5 or 6 months.

Well, I am one Dutchtown resident that welcomes SLMPD presence! I hope for crime to go down, but it is bad, and I'm growing tired of it.

Very sad situation and it's pathetic that this worthless scumbag had to take a good person serving his country out with him. I have relatives that live close to where this happened who also welcome more police and more arrests. That comment that a family member made about people around there "not liking police" is ridiculous. I read this morning that the perp was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2005. So why in the hell is he out not 6 full years into his sentence?

Reforming our judicial system and really punishing the parasites that plague our city will go a long way in reducing crime.

Damn. My condolences to his family and brothers and sisters in uniform.

You and your neighbors should start having occasional block parties and invite the police to join you. Have them cordon off a section of a street, play some music, have some munchies. Let everyone mingle and get to know one another, including forming personal connections with the officers. Make them a part of your community. Get residents to know them and there will be less mistrust. There might even be people who will gladly turn others in if they know an officer personally and feel safe reaching out to them. I'm totally serious. In fact, the first "block party" should be to honor the deceased Marshal and the 2 others wounded, who risked (and gave) their lives to make your neighborhood safer for you. If there's a community center or church basement or something where you can hold it, that would be an idea to consider for the first one. Call the Captain and tell him you'd like to organize something and enlist his help.

I too live in Dutchtown and my route to work was detoured due to the blockades.
