Riffing off of a thread in the Missouri forum:

There seems to be few cicadas here in U City; maybe I'm jinxing myself... But as I go back and forth between West County and U City, the difference is dramatic. My old suburb in Ballwin is overrun with cicadas but I haven't seen any in U City. Do the current crop of 13 year cicadas come out at different times?

It's still pretty early -- if you see the thread on the general MO forum you'll see that folks are just beginning to have a lot of them, and yes, they definitely hatch at slightly different times.

That said, the difference in the number and types of trees in the city and increased levels in pollution could probably also explain the difference. Surely somebody knows more about this than me though!

I haven't heard or seen even one in Clayton. At my parents very wooded neighborhood in Des Peres they are everywhere.

I really starting noticing them last weekend in Kirkwood. I took a walk in my walkable city on Saturday afternoon and they were buzzing around and I took another walk early Sunday and a huge number covered someone's picket fence. I'd never seen cicadas do that before.

True Arag. Best part of that experience was making a passenger announcement on the plane..."Hello ladies and gentlemen, we've just reach our cruising altitud.....AHHHH.....chhhhhhh.....ok, sorry about that, just found a cicada under my pantleg...we're at 37,000 ft, and will be in Washington in 2 hours...Seatbelt sign is coming off"
