Does anyone know if I need to register my car and get a new drivers license when I move to MO? I'll be a full time student, and didn't know if it was necessary, and/or beneficial? Anyone with specific experiences from CA? Would it be harder to get it re-registered in CA if I move back? I read something about how they have stricter smog regulations or something. Thanks!!

You don't have to register your car in MO if you are a student here for school.

No need if you are a student.
Even though I lived in MO for two years, I never registered in MO and kept my CA drivers license.

I seams like a third of STL residents have their cars registered in IL.

Thats just because we have that stupid personal property tax. When I moved here from FL, I bought a car prior to moving...got here....and they want me to pay tax on something I bought in another state.....already paid sales tax...now I have to pay every year. o_0

I get it....but come on, there has to be another way.

^Sure there's tons of other ways: Higher property tax rates for your home, higher sales taxes on goods and groceries etc.

Missouri is mid-range on rankings of taxes for states. For those who come from places without the tax I can see where it might be surprising, but I have no problem with the tax. I'd rather put the burden on those who choose to drive luxury cars or who own boats than those who are struggling as would happen if we increased sales tax.

I have not seen the phenomenon of anywhere near 1/3 of STL residents' cars being registered in IL. Take a drive through Southampton or Holly Hills or one of St. Louis' many residential neighborhoods and the cars parked on the street certainly don't have IL plates.
