Can anyone recommend some of the best small towns surrounding St. Lou for raising a little livestock and growing fresh veggies and orchards?
Nice towns to live/good places to be a farmer please.
Thanks! I put a similar thread in the Springfield board and I'm trying to narrow down.

I like IL, anywhere in the area between Milstadt to Hecker to Waterloo. It's close to the metro yet has the feel of the country. Plus on the MO side down here the ground is nothing but rocks.

pdm_ad has a point about the rocks, though there are plenty of farms in Missouri, so they must figure it out somehow.

Check out the Augusta area in western St. Charles County. Close to St. Louis but beautiful country. Lots of Wineries and Vineyards, but there are dairy farms, cattle, corn, soybeans, and orchards. Good soil! Parks, bike trails, and located along Missouri River.

Im pretty sure the rocky soil is primarily located in northern MO. I see farms all over the place.

I know several friends o the family that have farms near Breeze, Il and near Rend Lake, Il. On the Missouri side check out the towns up 79 from o'fallon up to Clarksville. The areas near Augusta, Defiance, and Washington, Mo might fit te bill too. Those areas are the heart if MO wine country.

The soil is not particularly rocky in Jeffco and Ste Gen.
