I just got a job at St. Louis University Hospital. What's the area like around here? I'm also looking for an apartment and want something that's semi-close but more importantly safe. Thanks!

The neighborhoods in the vicinity of SLU Hospital vary in character.
to the south, across I-44, there's Shaw (stable, middle-class, good mix of solid, mostly-brick housing), and Compton Heights (higher-end larger homes built over a century ago). To the west is Botanical Heights (new suburban-style frame homes with garages). To the south is Midtown and Grand Center, which surround the main SLU campus. Here you can find lofts, high-rise apartments, student apartments, and much more. As well as a lot of entertainment, restaurants, etc. And to the east is the Gate District (again, the location of newer, suburban-style homes.). As far as safety, I'd say you are basically safe in any of these neighborhoods if you aren't haphazard and use good judgment.

If you want to be close to the hospital and safety is a priority, look in Lafayette Square, Shaw, Tower Grove South, Southwest Gardens, a little further is The Hill.

Everything in the immediate area is pretty safe -- just depends on what you're looking for as far as density and walkability and how much you can afford. If you share those details with us, we can offer better suggestions for you.
