I don't understand why people think there is nothing going on downtown. In areas like the Old PostOffice and Wash Ave therre is activity 20 hours of the day. It's perception not reality that downtown isn't busy. I live down here and it IS busy.

Probably because, relative to other major cities, downtown STL is pretty desolate. There are little pockets of restaurants and so forth that are cute but most of the city is still pretty run down and generates little in the way of patrons. Even driving down there is no big deal because there are so few cars on the road unless you're by kiener plaza during baseball season or Scottrade while the Blues are in town. It's just not a boomin' place.

I wasn't trying to slam downtown but in regards to the OP I wouldn't really point her in that direction. It sounds like she googled around STL and got caught up in some of the marketing hype from condo development companies trying to sell their property. Just trying to point her in the right direction.

If you like more dive-y bars, I'd recommend Soulard. Wash Ave and CWE tend to be a more upscale vibe, while Soulard is more relaxed in my opinion.

I think you were down on a bad night. Its not uncommon to sit in traffic for 30 mins try to cover 12 blocks on the weekend
