My biggest thing is clean and safe. I much prefer a suite so the kids can have their own area...or more that we can have our own space! Breakfast included is a bonus with 3 and 4 year olds...just makes the morning easier. I don't mind paying for parking necessarily. And I'd like to keep price below $150/night with either AAA or Govt rate. The Homewood Suites is $120, Drury is about the same.

As a rule I think Drurys are more family friendly than Starwood properties (Sheratons, Westins etc.) I know less about Homewoods, but they seem to be in a similar vein to Drury. A lot of people I know won't stay anywhere but a Drury. They have crazy high brand loyalty.

For the sake of curiosity, I just ran both the Homewood and the Sheraton for April 10th-14th, 2013, and to my astonishment, they were both very HIGH, identical: $159 preferred rate, each hotel, per night.

Homewood Suites is a Hilton property. I'm almost positive that Homewood Suites does free breakfast, but only during the week. It's a nice, newer hotel. Drury Inn always advertises their free hot breakfast, so there's that.

I'm sure the gov't rate is significantly lower. You have to catch those early, but they're great deals if you qualify for them.

Yes, I can get Homewood Suites for $122 AAA rate, actually. And the Drury is $114 gov't rate at the Arch and $120 gov't rate at Forest Park.

The critical part of it is "if you qualify." And the available rooms at the government rate at many of the DT St. Louis hotels is limited.
