Southhampton is very nice. The area is getting a lot of new, young families moving in. The houses are on the small side, but tend to have a lot of character, good woodwork, and stained glass windows. Ted Drews, Mom's Deli, and a lot of little shops are nearby. There is a brand new Target in the area, as well as plenty of chain grocery stores. Southhampton is one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

The schools..... well, the public schools aren't that great. There are good magnet schools and charter schools (most not in the immediate neighborhood, but within a few miles), but most people in the neighborhood send their kids to the local Catholic schools (St. Gabriel, St. Joan of Arc, St. Rafael) or the Lutheran School in St. Louis Hills (Word of Life). These schools run about 3-5K per year.

I can! My husband and I live in this neighborhood with our 2 kids.
For city living, you can't beat it. It's quiet, safe, affordable and stable. We're in our early 30's and there are lots of young families there. Macklind is our "Main St." and we have a couple restaurants, coffee shops, a small grocery, a couple bars and some specialty stores. For schools, your options are the city magnet program or the local parochial schools. The general city schools are not great, as you probably know.
It's a very walkable place, people out with dogs and kids a lot. You'll like it.
