My girlfriend and I hit a rough patch and I'm not sure if or when I'm allowed back home. For the moment I am at my mom's, the future is looking quite grim with my lady and I so as it stands I have until the end of March 2015 to find a place. My max limit for rent is $360-$400 a month. I don't have a car anymore so I am searching for places that are close to south city bus routes, preferably Grand, Cherokee or Chippewa area since it would make it easier to get to work on time. Any help and suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Wishing you the best of luck, the budget isn't huge so the neighborhood selection can be "interesting" but I wouldn't settle to much (bad neighborhood that meets your budget) if you look hard enough, you'll find one that will give you a safe location, often a fun location, that can meet a budget too.

Years back I had a friend who rented a one bedroom one bath apartment in Soulard for about $400. It was tiny, but in good condition, second floor unit, no special access parking, and exterior stair entrance...but it WORKED for him on his budget. Doing a quick search on Zillow yields about 8 results in South City alone that are within your $0-$400 /month price range.

I say "don't settle" because of experience. My wife was looking for an apartment that worked on her first year teaching salary around 2006. We went and visited several apartments around the area, and she was dead set on signing a lease at one location...I pushed her to keep looking, but she was hunkered down on the price...I eventually did convince her to look at a few more locations before we put her name on the line (the place she was about to sign at looked shady, and I didn't feel comfortable leaving my then girlfriend alone at that complex). We eventually found a great studio, with great views, in a good little apartment complex. Nice pool, good workout room, and friendly staff...and most importantly at her price point. While it was far from perfect, it beat the alternative by leaps and bounds.

Have you considered finding a roommate? You could probably live in a good area with a roommate for your price range.
