I will be graduating from a college in the Detroit area and moving to the St. Louis area in July for a job. The job will be located in De Soto, so I was hoping for recommendations on places to live that won't result in an hour or longer commute (I did this last summer while interning and it took its toll after 3 months). I've done a little research in the topic and it seems that people have recommended Kirkwood for living outside the city. I'm mainly creating this post because the other posts I've seen are usually couples or families.

About me:
-Early 20's with an engineering degree
-Looking for a younger crowd (I have no family/don't know anyone in the area)
-Safe neighborhoods is a big plus (I'm not looking to live in another Detroit/Flint)
-No kids or any significant other
-Commutes of up to 35-40 miles are manageable
-Would prefer to keep rent under $1000/month if I end up living alone.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Your best bet for the type of community you're looking for would probably be living in Soulard and driving down 55 to work. Your commute will be about 50 min to an hour though. Tower Grove is another neighborhood that might work for you but that is going to be the same thing...

There are plenty of communities in south st. louis that are safe and closer. You could probably live in Concord or Arnold and be perfectly OK but in a less "hip" area.
