So I read the thread on bootlegging in Detroit, and it got me wondering-what was the bootlegging industry like here in St. Louis? I know that Prohibition shut down many brewers that were located here, with Anheuser-Busch limping along on near-beers, but how did actual alcohol circulate in St. Louis during the Prohibition Era?

Here is a good article from Missouri Life magazine: Prohibition in Missouri - MissouriLife.com. There is also a book available called Wetter Than the Mississippi about prohibition and bootlegging in St. Louis. Hope that helps

My family lived on the South Side and were of Bohemian and German stock. My grandfather brewed beer in the basement and made my mother and grandmother bottle and cap it. I don't think he sold it - just kept it around for himself and his friends. To this day my mother (who is in her 90s) can't stand the smell of beer and avoided drinking (but not unfortunately, drunks.)
