Can someone please tell me a bit about Brentwood and Kirkwood schools? I am especially interested in opinion of people who have kids in these. The greatschools.org reviews and test scores look very good and there have been other discussions on the topic on this site. My specific questions are about social atmosphere and resources for gifted kids. I have an artsy bookworm kid so I need a place she would fit in and not feel “weird” for liking books. I heard some very negative things about Clayton schools social structure and how a child’s status depends on how much money the family has. I want to know if Brentwood and Kirkwood are like that as well (even if they are not as expensive). I also need to know if the schools have good gifted programs and strong art/music component. The reason I am interested in Brentwood is because it is a small town where she would be able to walk to school/from school and hopefully hang out with her friends after school. Kirkwood is bigger but I think having neighborhood friends would still be possible. Please let me know if that's not the case. Thanks!

I was hoping someone else would answer but since they haven't I'll chime in on Kirkwood as I currently have kids in elementary and the high school who started in elementary there.

The district has a good reputation overall. I'm not aware specifically about gifted programs, but from a social perspective, I don't think your child would be left out for being an artsy bookworm. There are plenty of those in Kirkwood. As far as I know the schools starting in elementary through high school support art and also have very strong music programs. The high school has some pretty impressive music programs, theater, etc. I don't know your child's age, but yeah, many kids walk to and from school, from elementary through high school. Downtown Kirkwood is kind of a big hangout for Nipher middle school kids after school. Kirkwood is the type of place you see lots of kids out weather permitting all year. Lot's of activities available beyond school, through the library, parks and recs, the municipal pool, etc. Kirkwood is somewhat spread out though, so if you live on the periphery walking to and from school and downtown etc. might be difficult. We are fortunate to live pretty close to the downtown area.

Hi

Its funny. The last 10 years I keep reading stories about hpw high the Brentwood school district kids score. Frankly, I don't believe it. The things u say about Clayton are true. However, if I had kids I'd try to send them to parkway. My second choice would be Ladue schools. Afterall, the wealthy people in Ladue send their kids to the Country Day or John Burroughs. I think the best way to judge school districts is where their high school graduates get scholarships. If they're going to MIT and Stanford, that's the school district Id want my kids to attend.

Believe it or not, the numbers for Brentwood (MAP, ACT, graduation rate, etc) are pretty compelling. Not sure if it is because it is such a small district or what, but they seem to hold their own against any other district in the metro.

School Report Card

I notice also in there that Brentwood has 0% in gifted program whereas Kirkwood has 15%, so that might be insightful as well.

How come you don't believe it? Is there something wrong with Brentwood schools? Since I don't know anybody in that district, all I really know about them is what I see on greatschools.net (which I agree can be misleading).
