Note: I'm inquiring about tax avoidance (aka what Apple does) and not evasion.

So I'm thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, but it looks like I'll have to pay the 10 percent sales tax...go figure. Now, I'm putting about 3,600 down on the car. But if I were to add sales tax, it would be a total of $5,600. So, is there a way around the taxes (buying in Ill.?) or at least reduce my out of pocket expense? Like can a dealer roll the taxes into the purchase price?

Thanks!

That's just the sales tax baby.
Talk about the yearly hammer you gonna be slammed with in the name of "personal propert tax" on this car.
I hate this about MO personal property tax. Many states including IL and NY dont $krew u with yearly personal property tax on cars, boats, pvt planes etc.

Google around on this. It used to be that if you were a MO resident buying in IL you would still have to pay MO sales tax but didn't have to pay the local sales tax depending on what municipality you live in. The local sales tax can be a huge chunk. I think that's the rule now but I'm not sure so you'll certainly have to do more research. I'm sure an IL dealer would be happy to help.

yes you can roll the sales tax into your loan- you'll likely have to ask for the dealership to do that as i don't think it is customary in MO (it is in many other states).

Even if you buy out of state, you have to pay the use tax as soon as you bring it in state.

Use tax is basically the sales tax you would have paid if you had bought it in state minus the sales tax you paid in the other state. Use tax can be rolled into a loan just like sales tax.

So I can roll it in to the loan? Okay, that makes it better. I was thinking about a new car in the future, but I did not want have to pay $2000 in taxes on TOP of putting 20% down. Dang missouri taxes

Overall Missouri taxes aren't worse than other states, but they are a little more complicated than they need to be.
