most personal injury lawyers (the ones i know, anyways) are the "only collect when you collect" type. so, in that way they are affordable because you are only going to pay them out of what they win you. it's normally a third, or 33.3% of your settlement. i think that's pretty standard. a third is a big chunk, but your 2/3 is way more than you'd get on your own, so it's a necessary evil.

i had a car accident a few years back where i had the same insurance as the party at fault, and the accident was complicated with a second "at fault" party. my car was un-drivable, my 2 kids had minor injuries, and i had some more serious injuries. basically, my insurance wasn't going to fight for me, so i had to hire a lawyer who would.

the guy i hired was great. relentless. persistent. calls bull**** as he sees it. got me a fair settlement, and for the insurance company to treat the case as it should, which is what i needed. his name is matt nagel - i'm pretty sure you can google that to get in touch with him.

I had a good experience with Jim Krupp.
