I've been accepting to Wash U School of Medicine for their post-bac program and I have to move to St. Louis this month. What are good affordable apartments to rent that is near a metrolink? 1 or 2 bedrooms. My top choice was the Cupples Station but they have some bad reviews and someone said that it is noise. Also, some people feel like it's dangerous to live downtown by yourself. If anyone can give me any advice please do. Because I'm 12hrs away, I don't have time/money to visit and choose an apartment like I normally do.

Also, what are areas/apartments to stay away from and why?

S/N: I would prefer the apt to have a Washer/Dryer in the Unit and a fitness center.

Apartments with washer/dryer in unit tend to be new renovations. You'll find the highest concentration of them downtown. Lots of grad students in CWE and southern University City, but most of these are individuals renting out units. The giant complexes in CWE tend to be older/dated. One of the newer complexes in CWE is metrolofts. They have washer/dryers in every unit and a fitness center. Because they're the nicer end of places in CWE, the prices are pretty high (min $1200). While there are more grad students in these areas, I'd estimate that the safety level is probably on par with downtown--might feel safer because there's a higher density of residential units.

In the burbs right off the Metro Line, there's Allegro at the Boulevard. Again, on the expensive side. I'd say you're looking at around $1k/month minimum for the amenities you're hoping to find.

Cupples station advertises prices of 600-700 for a 1 bed and 800+ for a 2 bed, so I am guessing you are max budget of 800. There are a bunch of mid-rises just east of DeBaliviere on Pershing and Kingsbury too I think, also that segment of Belt- I would look at those. Vintage and probably shared laundry, but oh so close to Wash U Med, and a pretty cool area to boot.

Alternatively, you could also see if there is anything in U City near the Big Bend or Skinker metrolink stations. There are some large multi-tenant buildings thereabout but many of them are sub-standard student housing so you'd have to do some homework. A duplex or a quad-plex around either of those stations might be ideal.

We looked into cupples before moving to saint louis, I'd recommend staying away. The leasing agent admitted to having a couple of break ins and vandalisms. Area didn't look all that great, either.

Have you looked at Metro lofts? They're across the street from STL College of pharmacy and barnes jewish.

You should check out the West End Lofts which are located within walking distance to the School of Medicine and BJH. Rent includes all utilities except electric (cable, water, sewer, trash, internet). Also includes covered parking, pool, fitness center, billiards room and guest suite. All units have an in-unit washer/dryer.

Does anyone know about the Kingbury Apts. the ones on St Clara street, it's a 7 story building, just north a few blocks from Waterman? The neighborhood is so mixed and at times sketchy. We're also looking for an apartment in a sort of quiet area, hopefully close to Clayton/WashU right over there by Demun as well.

Any suggestions? What are those neighborhoods like?

Thanks!
