I didn't feel like searching all the threads to see if this has been posted before so I went ahead and posted it anyway. Kind of depressing but I'm not surprised looking at all the empty houses I see just driving around. What does surprise me is out of all the cities in this country, look at the top 5.

1. WICHITA
2. PORTLAND
3. BIRMINGHAM
4. KANSAS CITY MO
5. ST.LOUIS

Cities with the most abandoned homes

Just for the record, that ranking is not for the cities with the most abandoned homes; it is for the cities with the highest percentage of abandoned homes among homes that are in foreclosure... pretty important difference there. I'm not sure why that metric is relevant, either, unless your living happens to be based on collecting settlements from distressed homeowners.

I actually think it's very good to know these kinds of things. The St. Louis ranking was shocking to me, considering the home prices we are finding here (much higher than we planned). I notice when I start plugging in stats to look at homes, there are quite more foreclosures and pre-foreclosures than I expected.

The city should set up a program that gives an individual 2000 to 8000 In TIF funds to someone that buys an abandon house and fix it up and moves in to the city for at lest 5 years.

Agreed. Perhaps an urban version of the homestead act could be implemented. Of course, similar to providing protection for settlers against rampaging Indians, the federal government would need to provide protection against the locals who would be intent on thwarting efforts to turn these urban wastelands back into productive use.

Some of those houses really don't need that much done to them while others pretty much need to be bulldozed.
