What a bummer about Balabans! Hopefully they will get things straighted out and open back up!

It's weird that seem they seem to be implying they will reopen. I wonder what's going on- I was there in December and the place was plenty busy, the service was good and the food great...

I think it's weird the post didn't run anything either- that place is an institution.

There was an article on STLtoday.com (partner of Post-Dispatch & KMOV), but I couldn't find it for the life of me. You might also try Sauce Magazine Online to get more info. If I remember right, they had an issue with financing, not influx of customers.

The Post did run an article:
STLtoday - Entertainment - Dining (broken link)

Also, there was a report in the Business Journal:
Cafe Balaban closes as owners look for buyer - St. Louis Business Journal:

I can't find a link to it, but a few months ago there was a very damaging report on one of the TV stations about Balabans having problems with health inspections.

My biggest fear is that the failure of Balabans will make the owner financially unstable and drag his other restaurant, Modesto, down also. I love Modesto.

Yeah I was looking on Stltoday.com. It's become my lifeline to home I guess

I checked out sauce and all I could find from a quick search was a brief in their gossip, gossip, gossip section saying exactly what we all know...

Hopefully it opens back up... If I had any money I'd probably invest- that place is an institution.
