Well this is an interesting accolade. Not quite as nice as being named one of the best zoo's in the entire world, but I'll take it. It seems like more and more people and organizations are starting to realize St. Louis actually exists, and wow it's even pretty damn nice. They even mentioned a few of my hangouts (The Dubliner, Schlalfy Tap Room, etc).

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis bars and cocktails are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve.

St. Louis has been named Esquire Magazine's "Bar City of the Year," and it was about time. Even Esquire thinks so, especially since the city has been left off the list for the past 10 years.

"This year, a focus on cities we've underserved lately - and one we've overlooked almost entirely. Namely, St. Louis, which as he (David Wondrich) recounts here, we should've discovered a long time ago," the article stated.

In his article, writer David Wondrich writes about some St. Louis favorites: The Dubliner, Dressel's Public House, Llywelyn's and O'Connell's.

"The Dubliner has Irish beer and whiskey and bits of Irish decor, but no bar in Ireland ever had a ceiling so high or a space so vast, and ribs and pork rinds are hardly Dublin fare," Wondrich wrote.

He even stopped by the Schlalfy Tap Room and Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, which he enjoyed, but pointed out that they aren't exactly "oozing with local character."

The other bars Wondrich visited: Harlem Tap Room, Silverleaf Lounge, Royale, Sanctuaria, Rigazzi's, Milo's Bocce Garden, Planter's House and Jack Patrick's Bar & Grill.

At the end of the evening, Wondrich was kind of bummed that he was only able to make it to about nine of the 79 or so neighborhoods that St. Louis has to offer. We wouldn't be surprised if he comes back for another round.

That's one of the things that surprised me when I first moved here. Bars EVERYWHERE.

Yeah people like their beer in St. Louis that is for sure.

It's really the same in cities pretty much every where though. Chicago being a much bigger city probably has about 1,000 bars for example.
