I wouldnt rule out Downtown or Soulard. Give it a try since it has all of the needs you mentioned.

Thanks for everyone's responses - greatly appreciated. I appreciate input on other areas (soulard, etc) but I'm looking for something on or near metro

I have not heard much about Clayton - of course it looks like a nice area, but have I not heard much because its more expensive? It seems odd clayton would be more expensive as its further from downtown.

As with many people, money is an issue for me. My research so far has shown

a.) Clayton is very expensive

b.) Clayton is mostly condos, not apts, and

c.) Most of Clayton is 2-3 bedroom condos - I'm single - no use for 2-3 bedrooms

Any idea of monthly rent an small (ard 200-300 sf) studio or (ard 500 sf)1 BR/ 1 Bath in downtown, CWE, and Clayton? Also, are there even a lot of studios in St. Louis? They seem hard to find to me.

Thank you again everyone for input

200-300 sf?? I don't think you'll find that in St. Louis. there are some studios, but mostly one bedrooms and up. The reason is simple: it's not that expensive to live here.

In the CWE prices range from 450 for a studio to about $900 on the highest end of a 1 br. There are loads of places available in the $6-700 range.

Downtown is a bit more expensive typically because everything is newer. Generally from about 800-900 and up into the 1300+ range. Most places are in the 1000-1200 range, but the places are typically much larger and newer than CWE.

Clayton would not be somewhere I'd suggest for you. it's more expensive and caters to the older crowd more. Prices range from the 800s up, but you're right that there are more 2 BRs out there than 1s.

The lofts downtown are pretty cool, I used to live in the AD Brown building at Tucker and Washington which was cool, but I would make sure that you got protected parking.

The Central West End is very cool and being an artistic guy, you might want to check it out. If the CWE is too pricey, check out Dogtown or Maplewood.
