Hi,

I am considering relocating to the St. Louis area. I have been there several times but for long weekends. The heat and humidity are welcome. Work isn't really an issue so I am open to locations.

I am over 45 and have two college age kids who will visit. I have a cousin who lives in Washington MO and says the city is not safe. I believe there could be areas that are safe for a single woman.

I am looking for a two bedroom apartment that allows dogs and does not have paper thin walls ($1300ish).

Please give me input as to where would be a good place to live and meet people and have an active social life (not just the bars). I am not set on the city and open to suggestions. Trying to start over and make a life after finding myself single after many years.

Thank you for your help!

Most of the city is safe for anyone, including a single woman. Don't believe the hype. There are bad areas, but it is no more dangerous than any other area. I lived in Southwest Garden, right on the border of Tower Grove Park for several years and loved it. I would look in any of the areas surrounding there - The Hill, Clifton Heights, Dogtown, Kingshighway Hills, Northampton, Tower Grove South, Botanical Heights, Shaw. These are all great neighbourhoods.

In my experience, the people who are afraid of the city are those who never go there. It's really a good place to live - always something to do, things to experience.

You can certainly live in the suburbs and find common interest groups to join and meet people, but I think the city is the way to go for single mingles. Most of my single friends live in the city and enjoy it, they've lived in Downtown, Downtown West, Lafayette Park, Central West End, Forest Park Southeast, Soulard, Dogtown. I hear The Grove and Tower Grove South get talked about favorably as well. I won't try to speculate about which neighborhoods are best for non-bar socializing nowadays.

Edit: If you aren't a drug dealer you shouldn't encounter much more crime than you would in any city. Cities always expose you to more nuisance crime (e.g. property damage) than rural areas.

Edit2: You can take the bus or MetroLink to the Amtrak station and ride the train to Washington for visits, if your cousin picks you up. :-D
