St. Louis really IS a rather "southern" style city.. I lived there 8 years, and am originally from Dallas. The STL has much of the southern grace and old-money attitudes that many southern cities exemplify, and that's not saying anything bad.

But STL ALSO has a bit of the "back east" and "northern" mentalities as well, in the way the city was gridded out and in its urban core.... so, it's really a hodgepodge of many urban styles, and a truly wonderful place that I miss dearly...

Default Thats news to me

Of course there are some influences and similarities with Southern cities.. but over my life I have consistently heard the consensus that St. Louis is the "western most eastern city". I have experienced New Orleans, Dallas as well as Boston, NY, and Washington - and in my own personal experience I believe STL to be closer to the latter.

In response to the original post: With no disrespect to "southern cities" it is NO surprise to me that a Chicagoan would make an incorrect assumption of St. Louis in an attempt to belittle it. In my experience, living near Chicago for some time and often visiting Chicago, the vast majority of Chicagoans continually attempt to focus on any and all negative aspects of St. Louis while igonoring all of the wonderful things about it in order to boost their own self esteem about their city. Why they do this is beyond me - one could only assume the "king of the forest" has a few insecurity issues - although I'm sure Chicagoans would never admit this.

Hee-hee, insecurity issues, imagine that!
