We are considering a move to St. Louis in the near future. We moved to NW AR recently without knowing that getting services like respite, day programs, etc... for our 21 year old daughter who has Williams Syndrome would be such a maze. And a long maze at that. The worst thing is that you have to figure everything out with minimal help from human services employees.
We have been doing some research and discovered that Missouri has a very high state rating for special needs services. It's only a few hours from where we are now so it may be worth relocating to MO. The St. Louis area is our first choice because we need to be close to good hospitals since our daughter has congenital heart disease. She's stable now and we don't anticipate any future problems, but better to be near good health services.
I already have a connection with Missouri since I did my Army basic training at Ft. Leonardwood. It was 45 years ago, but I still remember it well.
It's not that services aren't available in AR, it's just that the wait to get them is daunting, not to mention discouraging.
Any advice, pro or con, will be appreciated greatly.

I wish I had an answer. Guess no one else looking here does, either. Maybe start at St. Louis Children's Hospital. They have excellent services and resources, so that might be a start.

Good luck to you. Hope this helps - even a little.

If you are looking for more resources,Special School District of St. Louis County has some great resources. They don't just have resources for children, but adults as well since your daughter is 21.
