True. Between Pruitt Igoe and White Flight, the Northside was plagued with trouble and blight before McKee hit the scene. His actions just sped up the decay even more.

So North St. Louis would be most comparable to and identify most with East St. Louis. This Pruitt Igoe housing project is really impressive in its own special way. The looks, its story, and reputation remind me of Cabrini Green in Chicago.

Would some people from St. Louis pretend that East St. Louis just isn't there? Like just not talk about it, let alone go there, and just ignore it all together.

We all know it is there I wouldn't say that anyone purposely pretends otherwise - but as previously stated, aside from urban exploration and adult entertainment, there is no cause to go there.

Where ESTL and North St. Louis have commonality, is in the fact that they are both now predominantly African American areas and largely impoverished, with histories of white flight, crime and racism.

I wouldn't say anyone purposely ignores East St. Louis...it's just not very relevant to most people.

No reason to be there for me. No different than any other ghetto. It's rather small, and easy to drive past on the freeway.

I grew up on the East Side. Everyone avoided East Stl then, much like most people in MO avoided North City. As for the relationship with StL? Specifically with East Stl, not much of one.

Although, the Metro East overall remains a very large part of the StL area. 600k+ population and it has a lot of economic anchors.

For most St. Louisans there's no reason to go there. And given that it's a different city in a different state, there's not much need to talk about it either, since it's not like we have jurisdiction over it.
