The Spirit of St Louis would work too, but the name was already used for an aircraft. Is there some rule that a team’s name has to be totally original? After all, I seem to recall that for many years, our city had two teams called The Cardinals.

It's not a rule but it's probably a good idea within sports. Having two The Cardinals was a pain. But naming the team after the Spirit of St Louis wouldn't be any worse than naming a team after a music style or the color of their socks or whatever, as long as it's not trademarked by someone else.

Note that The Football Cardinals were originally named The Chicago Cardinals before moving to St. Louis, they weren't trying to copy the baseball team or anything.

Interesting... I had never heard of the Chicago Cardinals.
I wonder which team was named first: them, or the STL baseball Cardinals?

I'm sure it's on Wikipedia somewhere but from memory I think the football Cardinals were created in the 30s, which would be after the baseball Cardinals. There were (and are) also college football Cardinals teams I think? I think cardinal socks and uniforms are less common than red, white or blue, but still sort of common.

Edit: Another fun fact about the Chicago Cardinals is that I think they merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a season due to financial hardship ("Card-Pitt").

I’m a little skeptical not only of the success of the team in St. Louis but also of the MLS as a whole.

Although youth soccer is in the area is strong, I don’t think that necessarily translates into people shelling out big bucks for season tickets.

I hope it’s successful though!

Its one of the oldest soccer towns in America. SLU still holds the mens Div-1 record for Soccer Championships. Soccer is beloved in StL like few places in the US.
