I am retired and researching moving to St. Louis if I can find a safe, walkable community. Looking in to renting apartment or condo. Where would you suggest?

Hi Karennkids.
In order to offer suggestions, it would be helpful if you shared some details, such as:
1. What is your budget?
2. Do you prefer urban or suburban living?
3. Do you have a car?
4. Are schools important (You said you're retired, but sometimes school districts matter to folks without kids.)?
5. Have you visited St. Louis yet or are you still in the early research phase?

Answers to these questions will open lots of possibilities. Have a good day!

Well, my own Kirkwood has a lot of apartments and condos near its old downtown with shops and restaurants, a YMCA, farmers market during season, train station, large park, and plenty of restaurants. There's even a theater that seems popular with the retired crowd, a muni pool for swimming. Of course, many of these things have been put on hold for covid, but hopefully will be back. Most are back already with changes. While St. Louis County in general is not very walkable, if you live near downtown Kirkwood it is fairly walkable. You are probably still getting in a car for groceries, medical care and stuff like that.

And while certainly not crime-free, it is still quite safe overall I would say. I'd check it out.

A pretty convenient location to anywhere else in the metro, too. Also check out Webster Groves for the same reasons (some different amenities though). Maybe Brentwood too but less walkable, IMHO.
