Slay raises an interesting point. He's gotten a lot of crap about Ballpark Village -- but would it be better if the thing were built and acting as a drain on our local economy?

Last thing St. Louis needs is something being a drain on it's economy. But one does wonder why that lot isn't turned into a temp. parking lot until they do build something.

^^My understanding is that it will be used for what they call "Temporary Entertainment Venues" for the All-Star Game -- which I believe is code for "beer tents." :P

At this point, beer tents would be an improvement I live downtown and take my daily run by the "ballpark village", it's quite depressing and would be really embarrassing if it stayed like that for the all-star game. Hell, atleast with the beer tents people can just get drunk and forget how crappy it looks..LOL.

03/18/2009 - Ballpark Village? Nothing but a parking lot and softball field for now - STLtoday.com (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/DC328FD535D869598625757D0058C5B3?OpenDocument - broken link)

Is there really any kind of demand for a softball field? How silly. Just make the whole thing a parking lot and call it a day -- good grief.

Softball Village? I can't believe the organization is screwing the fans and the city over like this.

Well it would have been nice if it were built years ago, but it's pretty hard to blame them right now given the state of the economy -- no one wants to expand, businesses are failing, you can't get credit and you can't sell bonds.

The economy wasn't that bad three years ago when the organization promised Ballpark Village. Granted the economy is bad right now, but look at all of the time they have had to produce. Three years ago, they promised that it would be complete by the All-Star Game, all of this time and they have done absolutely nothing. So many promises and proposals, so little progress.
