One of St. Louis' biggest risks is that their employment base is too heavily focused on blue collar manufacturing jobs versus a more diverse set of white collar jobs spread across more industries. They have some presence in banking, pharmaceuticals, retail, etc but not enough.
True - and w/ the not-at-all-positive [but not unexpected ] news from Chrysler of late, I'm fearing its going to get tougher. One reality is that you have a large pool of cities/towns vying for a [what seems to be] smaller number of businesses, esp. those that are looking to relocate and/or emerge of substantial size. Of course, 20 smaller companies employing 100 each has pros/cons versus 2 companies w/ a couple thousand employees - but they do bring positives to the mix; as you said, more diverse and then also some room for additional growth, as each company needs others to "feed" them w/ supplies.

I don't know what to tell you. I pulled them straight from Fortune's Web site and it says Fortune 500 in large letters at the top:
Fortune 500 2008: States - Missouri

LOL, yes. apparently my reading ability is a little shotty.

Still 8 fortune 500 companies is pretty good for other similarly sized cities. Look at KC, Milwaukee, Denver, Omaha, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Detroit etc. and we're doing better than most and on-par with all.

The only area where it's easy to find a job in STL is nursing.

Seriously, unemployment is terrible in the STL area. The only metro area in the nation that has it worse is Detroit.

Yeah, um, I don't usually pay much attention to the 8 skill-less yokels who spend their time whining in the comment section on KSDK's website.

Wow. You aren't even close on that one. You should actually look at the facts before posting things that you think might be true just because they fit your world view. The title of this site is city-data after all.
Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas

So according to the BLS, unemployment in St. Louis is roughly the same as in Chicago.

Sorry, but I have lived in Chicago and have been looking for a corporate job in St. Louis for years. In my profession I could move to most any metro area and find a great job, except for St. Louis. Comparing the executive level/professional job market in Chicago to St. Louis is laughable. They are not even in the same stratosphere.

Read the article on the front page of today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch if you think unemployment here is not a problem.
