Chase Park Plaza in the Central West End. Also, Hotel Indigo will be opening in the near future also in the CWE. Both of the Pinnacle Hotels on Laclede's Landing.

As for simple, updated, nice hotels that aren't "W" esque or Kimpton
Hotel Chain esque. Renaissance, either of the two Hilton Hotels downtown, either of the Hyatt Hotels downtown. There are plenty to choose from.

I like the Hilton across from the ballpark. Modern decor and spacious rooms.

We've stayed at the Renaissance Grand in St. Louis (once a Statler) and it was great.
