5600 Waterman is between Clara and Belt, right? I think that area is good. As you get close to Debaliviere, there have been some issues with crime, often due to the fact that it is a major public transportation hub with the MetroLink station there several bus routes passing through, and a lot of folks milling around, but I've stopped in at businesses there (Talyana's, Papa Johns) and used the MetroLink station several times and it doesn't feel especially dangerous, especially a block or two east of Debailiviere. Towards Union, though, is way nice. That is in the midst of the cities largest, guilded age mansions. Atlas restaurant is a great place to eat drink and be merry right there. You are a good mile from all the hub-bub on Euclid, though, and maybe 1.5 miles from U City Loop at 5600 Waterman. The Maryland apts are much closer to Euclid and all the good eating/drinking establishments around there, so if having that at your doorstep is a priortity you may want to go that way. It's my perception that Maryland apts are no safer (nor more dangerous) than 5600 Waterman. I'd say it's a toss up.

thanks for the advice folks. I've decided on the maryland location...Maryland Plaza was a highlight for me on my first visit to st louis...very vibrant but without the hustle and bustle of an actual downtown area. I look forward to taking advantage of all that the CWE has to offer...as well as the loop and the rest of the city.

Upon further investigation it really was a toss up...both had their advantages. But a good friend of mine that went to wash u that knows my personality very well thought the CWE would be the ideal location for me. I'm psyched.

I lived for many years in the area north of Forest Park, known as DeBaliviere Place. In college, I rented apartments on Pershing and Clara and then purchased a condo on Pershing shortly thereafter. I absolutely loved the neighborhood and miss it quite a bit! Never had any problems with crime - I had off-street gated parking for my apartments and a garage for my condo. There would be occasional car break-ins for cars parked on Pershing. Pershing is a fairly quiet street, but Waterman is very peaceful.

You can't go wrong with either option. Maryland House is a little closer to the heart of the CWE, which will put you in walking distance of more shops and nightlife - a major plus. And garage parking is always nice. Those two options might tip things in Maryland House's favor, but Waterman would be great too.

Edit: just noticed your post that you already chose a place - congrats!

Good Luck to you. Excellent choice. Of course either of them would have been.
