Can anyone tell me about this area? I found a very nice apartment for rent in the area and wanted to know a little about it before I moved there. Is it a very dangerous area? What part of the city is it considered? I don't know which parts are North St Louis, South St Louis, etc. I have 3 small children but the school district doesn't matter as they aren't old enough to attend. Thanks.

Very very poor, not at all diverse... wouldn't suggest it if you have better options.

What's your budget?

Well the apartment we are looking at is 4 bedrooms and only $600 a month, and has a security card entry, etc. I haven't visited yet but have seen pictures of the inside and it's amazing. Is the area safe?

I don't know specific crime info, and I'm not going to try to guess ... but if there is a nice 4 bedroom apartment for only $600/month, I guarantee there is a reason.

Since you live in Missouri, you should take a drive up there and check out the neighborhood for yourself. It is considered North St. Louis.

Most people will see the abandoned houses and groups of teenagers wandering around during a school day and run in the other direction. You may have a high tolerance for the neighborhood than others.

Practically speaking, though, it is a high crime area so if you are looking for some place where your kids can safely play in the yard, and you can stroll down to the local coffee shop and playground, and where there isn't trash blowing in the streets, and all of your neighbors keep their houses and lawns in good shape, then this isn't the neighborhood for you. If you want a nice place with a good interior and never leave the house, then it might be ok, provided that you have a good alarm system. There is reason this place is renting for less than a trailer in JeffCo.

I know that this place has one less bedroom, but it looks good, and it is in a great neighborhood that would be safe for your kids for only an extra $25/month:

I'm sorry what?

What exactly is it about my description of the area that you find fault with?

That more than 40% of the population lives below the poverty line? That the area is more than 96% black?

Ok then.

I used to work in that area and believe me, it's not safe. I especially wouldn't consider it with 3 small children.

The place you are looking at (Goodfellow and Natural Bridge) would fall into either the Wells-Goodfellow, or else the Mark Twain neighborhood. I don't much about either neighborhood, though I did read about a double homicide in Mark Twain last night. Wells-Goodfellow gets the same kind of press. This website is kind of cool in that it describes city neighborhoods by boundary (although it doesn't give you much beyond that)-- there are also some locally made homepages for some of the neighborhoods. Just click on the area:
