If you think St. Louis is flat, come to Chicago. It's depressingly flat here.

I knew it wasn't flat. I grew up in the 3900 block of McDonald. It's a big hill. I know...I walked it everyday of my life. Facing that hill with an armload of groceries or laundry..makes me tired just thinking about it

Not true. Most of North County is pretty flat. Most of St. Louis county, however, is composed of gently rolling hills. The southwestern and extreme southern portion of the county is the beginnings of the Ozark foothills.

For once, I agree with you there. However, I've been told that in parts of the Chicago suburbs there are some hills starting around Galina that get bigger the farther south you go. But the city of Chicago I would agree is flat as a board. Also for the most part, except for Art Hill, most of St. Louis City is pretty flat.

Honestly that's one of those things Chicagoans will tell you, but even out that way they're still very slightly sloping "hills" Most of northern Illinois is very flat -- we were even surprised when we went up to Lake Geneva in Wisconsin over the summer that it was as flat as it was. it had been described as hilly by many Chicagoans, but I realize that what they mean by that is a little different than what i grew up with.

I wouldn't say much of St. Louis is flat, but then if you're comparing it to other cities, it does seem flatter.

St. Louis City pretty much north of Highway 40 and east of Skinker Boulevard and especially east of Kingshighway is pretty flat. While St. Louis does have hills, like Chicago they probably were once farmland...all of St. Louis city and most of St. Louis County contain rich and fertile soil. Most of the county and the city was open prairie, parklike forest, and farmland just like most of Chicago was before it was built upon. Parts of Cleveland are even hillier than St. Louis, and Cincinnati is even hillier. I'd say most of its terrain, while hillier than the average Midwestern city, is still not uncommon for the Midwest. I've been to parts of Iowa that are even hillier than St. Louis, and Kansas City and Minneapolis I've heard are hilly too.
