Listening to the game right now... sooooooo frustrating - down 1-0, and how many potential goals Athletica has almost made the last ~20 minutes of the game! C'mon ladies!!!

BTW, and off-topic a bit but for those interested in such silly claims: //www.city-data.com/forum/socce...l#post10359307

EDIT/update: final score has Athletica ending their season w/ a loss, 1-0. Congrats though on season, and here is to this coming season...

Soccer is so frustrating to watch especially when you have an interest in the team. What appears so obvious from the sidelines is not apparent when you are actually on the field, seeing things from a different perspective and reacting to that. It also never over unti the final whistle blows. I've seen games lost during the last few seconds because of penalty kicks and unexpected goals. What a great game.

I don't want to get into contest but I would like to know how St. Louis considers itself the Soccer Capital of the United States? To me the answer is obviously LA/OC. Three pro teams, (SOL, Galaxy - Beckham is a putz- and Chivas/USA) about 5 NCAA Div I teams (m and w) in the top 30 (even more if you county San Diego) and an unparalleled youth club system that feeds many college and national teams. Add to the mix a manic hispanic culture that embraces futbol and you will understand why.

Youngest boychild plays soccer - and while not at all on even remotely of these higher levels of play, the flow, beauty, and frustrations are still there.

As to soccer capital of the US - as stated above, go to this thread: //www.city-data.com/forum/socce...pital-usa.html

Nice articles here about the game last night: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/othersports/story/C4C9385AFA98D43C862576180017538C?OpenDocument (broken link)

The history of the game runs deep here.

LA might have five division I teams, but STL has SLU, which has more national championships and NCAA Tournament appearances than any other program. You can also take a look at the Midwestern teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year and count the number of St. Louisans on the rosters of schools like Indiana, Northwestern, etc. The Bronze Boot game between SLU and SIU-Edwardsville used to draw huge crowds to Busch Stadium - the series was discontinued when SIUE went DII, but now that they're DI, I would expect it to start up again. SIUE even won a national chamopnship back in the 70s.

We have the Athletica, and I believe it's only a matter of time before we have an MLS (or whichever league ends up surviving) team.

The Scott Gallagher youth program and other club teams are extremely strong, and the Catholic high schools annually field some of the best high school teams in the country.

Indoor soccer was huge here in the 80s and 90s, and I believe we had an outdoor professional team back in the 70s. The Steamers were so much fun to watch back in the day and would sell out the St. Louis Arena on a regular basis. We later had the Storm and the Ambush, which won an indoor league championship.
