I need some advice from people who have used the public transit system in St. Louis. I'll be living in Richmond Heights, near St. Mary's, and working at Barnes Jewish Hospital. I have a teenager who will need to get to Clayton High School daily, either driven there by me, or by school bus. While the travel distance isn't far I'd like to avoid what seems to be difficult parking around Barnes (correct me if I'm wrong about this), and I'd prefer not to have to pay for parking. Barnes will provide me with free Metro transit. It looks like the Clayton Metro park and ride lot, though the closest one to the high school, is not free, from what I can tell on the website. Would it be a reasonable option to drive my daughter to Clayton HS, then drive to the Brentwood Metro station for the free park and ride? I'm not sure what traffic is like in this area, so don't know if this is a reasonable plan. Please let me know what your thoughts are if you have any experience in this area.
Thank you!

First off, you should let your teenager ride the district school bus to the high school. Otherwise you would have to drive up through Clayton to the high school on Brentwood/Hanley and then back out and that does not sound like fun to me! Plus that will give your child time on the bus to meet the students from your neighborhood who go to the high school. My kids have always enjoyed bus time! I am also guessing Clayton High starts classes pretty early in the morning as all the high schools seem to around here.

Personally, I always take the Metrolink into work now whenever I can since it is so much more convenient than driving through the "traffic of the day" which seems to change almost daily with construction, weather and volume changes. Yesterday is a prime example being 2 days after they closed Big Bend over 40 and with a big thunderstorm that knocked out stop lights and closed streets with downed trees throughout the county. The Metrolink still showed up on time and I made it to the Brentwood station at the normal time. (Getting home from there was another story!)

For me I have found that taking the Metrolink does not save me any time in the morning, but probably saves me some in the evening, and makes it much more convenient to bypass the unpredictable traffic bottlenecks in mid-County. The parking at the medical campus fills up fast, with most of the available WUSM surface parking now being east of Taylor (I'm not sure if that pertains to you as a BJC employee). If you live near St. Mary's you should be able to take the Bellevue or Highland Terrace bridges over 40 and then take Dale against traffic to go to the Brentwood Metrolink Garage. That garage is huge and always has tons of parking. You would not even have to touch Eager Road coming and going off Dale so you would only see local Richmond Heights traffic (I'm jealous).
