I'll be moving to St Louis from the UK later this year, and can't wait! One thing I am worried about, though, is that over here it's quite normal for houses or apartments to be rented as furnished, but I get the impression that pretty much all apartments in STL are rented unfurnished. So my question is, can anyone recommend places I can get inexpensive furniture, which will also deliver (I won't have a car)? I don't want to be sleeping on the floor for months! I'm looking at moving to the Central West End or somewhere close by. I'd be grateful for any advice!

I can't offer any advice, but I'm in a similiar situation, relocating to STL this summer. I noticed that STL lacks an IKEA, which was a little shocking to me, it being a fairly large metro area and all. Has anyone heard rumors of the Sweedish furniture barons moving to town?

Probably not until the economy recovers.

Try googling Value City, Weekends Only or Jennifer Convertibles. Most places (I think) will deliver for a fee. Just keep in mind if you're hauling furniture up or down stairs that it will actually fit in your doorway! Jennifer Convertibles (or Jennifer Leather) has furniture that is shipped in pieces and then assembled to help with that.

American has pretty good deals, just recently they had $200 off on every $600 you spend on furniture purchases.

Also Ashley furniture is relatively cheap, and actually for stuff like coffee tables or bookshelves try Target.

Talk at work last week of Ikea having definite plans in expanding into St. Louis market. Location was not confirmed, but more than likely the Chesterfield area.....Seemed legitimate to me at the time....I know for a fact that they have looked at a several potential locations......

I would recommend Weekends Only. I think the prices are very cheap, and they will deliver. Your best bets for getting them to deliver would be the one in Affton or the one in Fairview Heights. The biggest Weekends Only I believe is in south county. You would wnat to ask about delivery to the Central West End. There is also a place called "Good Works" in University City that has more chic-type furniture.

Good Works
Neighborhood: University City
6323 Delmar Blvd
Saint Louis, MO 63130

Weekends Only Furniture Outlet: Affton

8445 Gravois Rd, St Louis -

Weekends Only Furniture Outlet

6303 S. Lindbergh, St. Louis - This is the big one in South County. It has a St. Louis address because the zip code starts with 631xx, but it's outside the city.

I'm pretty sure Ikea just said that they are not looking in the St. Louis area as recently as the past couple of weeks. The constant rumors of IKEA coming to the area deserves its own page on Snopes.com

Here's an article on JANUARY 29, 2009

We recently bought a house here and St. Louis and just got furniture for our Living Room. We went through American with their "$200 off $600" sale. Also, they usually waive the delivery fee if your press them a bit.
