I am craving a good bagel. I love St. Louis Bread Company bagels but they aren't real to me - kind of like how I like Taco Bell but don't pretend it's Mexican. Any suggestions where I can get a good bagel in St. Louis. I live out around Olive and 270.

My husband would also like for me to ask about the availability of good doughnuts since they are also round and yummy.

Thanks!

I'd like to know too. The water here is decent enough to make good bagels.

As for donuts, I understand that Dunking Donuts are making a comeback in this area

I was recently in NY and they seem to be on every corner. But NY as the no-transfat laws and the taste is quite a bit different than what I remembered.

Einstein Brothers in the CWE, NE corner of Lindell and Euclid has the best bagels in town. Wonderful smoke-free atmosphere, excellent variety, great service, nice crowd, and never too busy. The wife and I go there a lot for breakfast.

Back to the OP:

"Where in St. Louis can I get a good bagel?"

I answered the question. Completely and succinctly. The employees and management of the Einstein Brothers Bagel restaurant in the CWE likely live in the local area. They work in STL, they are paid in STL, and they spend their money in STL. Just because it is a chain and not a mom and pop place it does not mean that the quality is not there.

It's the provincial attitude here than prevents so many people from thinking or enjoying life "outside the box."

Not a bagel guy - I like soft, creamy, melt in the mouth treats - but Pratzel Bakery is reported to be great.

Moving on to my preferred yeasty food:
St. Louis Hills Donut Shop @ 6917 Hampton Ave.
St. Louis - Best Of St. Louis - St. Louis Best Doughnuts - Eddie's Southtown Donuts (2007)
Donut Drive-In - St. Louis Bakery Restaurants - St. Louis - St. Louis Hills

Don't agree with that... there are quite a few people [me being one very strongly in that camp ], that will go out of their way, a long long way if necessary, to go to a true home-grown home-town truly 'local' place.

"Provincial"? In the manner that you are trying to imply? No. A desire to eat at quaint, wonderful, tasty, local restaurant? Yes.

BTW, provincial = one that lacks broad mindedness, only wants/knows what they know... so, IMHO, to me, one that caters only/mainly to chains is one that is the one that is narrow minded, not wanting to try variety of 'local' places; as you can get chain vittles all over the place.

Thanks everyone! This gives me some great places to try. I love both big box chains and little independent eateries so suggestions to both are appreciated. It's nice to discover something that I love that I can take with me when I move, but it is equally nice to have something that is unique to the city I am living in.

Bagel Factory
(314) 432-3583
11256 Olive Blvd
St Louis, MO 63141

This place serves bagels that are a lot more like the ones you'll find in New York. It is just a counter. They will not put the cream cheese on the bagel but it is available for purchase. Closed on Saturdays.

I can't really help with where you are, but doughnuts - try the Donut Drive In on Chippewa in the city.
