No I get it. A 30 minute commute is a blessing to some.

In fact there are multiple people at my work who commute to my office from the Cape and Sullivan areas. Also, I have a family member in Milwaukee who commutes to Chicago every day. I just can't imagine wasting that much of my life in the car. So much lost sleep/family time, wear and tear on your vehicle, gas, etc.

We moved to St Louis 10 years ago. We looked and looked for a good house for decent money. Everything in St Louis on the Missouri side is very high-priced, but not by Chicago standards of course.

In Illinois, prices are much lower. If you are looking for a large, older house in a BEAUTIFUL neighborhood, we are selling ours - 5200 sq ft, 9/10 acre lot, great back yard, 6 br, 4 bath (all full), full attic, full basement, new furnace, new kitchen, everything newly painted, new carpet, all shiny and pretty. House is 1930. It depends on what you want. My wife and I both work in St Louis, and the commute is very easy - I took the train every day, my wife drove.

Illinois - much more house for the money, plus fewer crazed Missourians (political comment there).

Thanks again for all the comments. Yes, our current commute time is quite long. When i go into the city, it is a 1 hour train ride not to mention the additional 15-20 minutes to drive to the station and then walk to my building. So, a 20-30 minute commute is HEAVEN! Given our current situation, I think I would gladly do a 20-30 min. commute from the western burbs in order to get a neighborhood, school district and house (more house for the money it seems) that would be "permanent." Chesterfield, Ballwin and it's surrounding neighborhoods do seem appealing and it looks like as things progress, these are the areas I will be concentrating on.

We live in the outer most 'burbs. It is only a 45 minute commute (tops) into downtown.

Most people here work in west county locations, and the commute is usually less than 20 minutes.

Nit a big deal if you are used to 1 1/2 hour commutes to go thirty miles.

You and your friends must be driving eighty plus miles an hour to get to downtown during morning rush hour in less than twenty minutes.

My spouse just started working at the VA hospital (John Cochran) on Grand. We live just west of Queeny Park. Fortunately she started after the re-opening of I-64. She leaves the house around 6:45 am and arrives around 7:30 am. Her evening commute is one solid hour and that's bailing out before the I-64/I-270 bottleneck.

I used to make it from LSL to Manchester/270 in 20 minutes at 8:30 am (I side many people in LSL work in West County, not downtown).

I drive about 70 mph. Never bogged down till the 141.

(the 45 minutes to Down down is one way)

Keep in mind when you are looking out west how far you are from the highway. My parents bought a house out in Ballwin. Ballwin is supposed to be 20 mins from the city. They are 10-15 mins from the highway with good traffic. THEN it's 20 mins into the city with good traffic.
