St. Louis - is it pedestrian friendly anywhere? Or mostly all car-oriented? How is the layout?

Not that I wouldn't have a car, but it is nice to be able to walk around places without jumping in the car for nearly everything.

Even if there were a few areas that are noteable exceptions...thinking of housing in particular, where you can just step out your front door and have access to restaurants or stores in places...

Thinking of this without compromising some major safety...and also thinking without being crazy wealthy either.

St. Louis city and the inner ring burbs feature quite a few very walkable streets. Public transit buses and Metro Link light rail service many of them.

Ped. Friendly areas
Downtown
Central West End
Soulard
south Grand
Midtown
Lafeyette Square
U City Loop
Clayton
Demun
Downtown Webster
Downtown Kirkwood
Cherokee street
Old Town St. Charles

Overall Downtown, the Central West End, Soulard, and South Grand sound like what you're looking for. I would certainly feel safe living and walking around in all of these areas. Cherokee street maybe the area seeing the most transition.

Moorlander pretty much said it. I would add, that those same areas mentioned are also very "bikeable". Which basically means, some bike lanes here and there, grid street system, trails/MUP's, and drivers who respect cyclists. In St. Louis, if you are going to go carless, which you indicated you didn't, the only real options are south grand, CWE, and Downtown. In going "less car" than any of the aftermentioned areas are great choices. I would include pretty much all of St. Louis city in that category.

Don't forget Brentwood--a small town in a big city and I can walk to the library, 3 grocery stores, my car mechanic (what a help that is!) and many other places--all on sidewalks! My kids walk to school and consider it a luxury--all the kids walk to school here.

CWE is great! Walking neighborhood to eateries, bars, coffee shops, bookstores, shops, movies, Forest Park, Zoo, Museum, hospital, and grocery store. PLUS, metro station in the heart!! Safe, hip, and most desirable walkable location in the city.

CWE or Clayton. The CWE is closer to downtown but with the metrolink Clayton comes in as a close second for being pedestrian friendly. Both have sidewalks and beautiful parks as well.

I would recommend CWE neighborhood east of Forest Park on Euclid.

Used to live there and right outside our apartment was able walk to bars, eateries, bookstores, grocery, movie theater, library, metrolink station, doctor's office, dentist, and even to the hospital when there was an emergency ... not to mention walking or biking to Forest Park, the zoo, History Museum, Art Museum, paddleboats, etc.

If only I worked in that area. I actually took the metrolink out to the suburbs to work lol.
