I've been thinking of moving to STL for the last couple of years and this week I make my first step. I'm coming up for a few days to check out some neighborhoods and properties and get a feel for the city. I've only been there once, for a professional continuing ed course, so didn't get to see much that time. I am so excited and anxious to see as much as I can! The house that I'm most interested in is in McKinley Heights...any opinions of the neighborhood?

What street/block? I live one neighborhood to the west of McKinley Heights (Fox Park). I've been in the area three years and love it. McKinley Heights is in a great location. You are right next to Soulard, Lafayette Square, Benton Park and super close to downtown. You will have access to all the highways (55,44,40 and 70). In the three years I have been in the city, we haven't really had any problems with crime. I have an alarm system and I'm careful about not leaving anything in my car, that seems to have worked.

Default McKinley Heights

The house I'm interested in is in the 2000 block of Ann Ave.

I made the move from TX to StL. No regrets here.

My uncle, a very successful lawyer, made the move from Clayton to a beautiful home in MH on Russell a decade ago.

McKinley Heights is a great area, especially along Russell. It's not super dangerous or anything but I imagine there would be significant property crime around there, so I'd follow stlcitygirls advice and you will be fine.

Different areas appeal to people differently. Many of my buyer's aren't comfortable in McKinley Heights unless its right on Russell. The rest of the neigbhorhood has a high concentration of rental properties. It is a great location with its proximity to Lafayette Square, Soulard and Benton Park at a much lower cost.

Good luck in your move

That intersection is not even in McKinley Heights. I am on the MH listserve and haven't heard anything in quite some time in regards to crime.

I'm back from STL and I LOVED it! The duplex in MH wasn't suitable, but I looked at some other properties in other areas that I liked, and am still checking the listings. But I was thrilled with the city and hope to move within a few months.
