Then, 9% of Blacks in the study ended up with positive Covid tests, but only 5% of whites. The white people had overall higher vitamin D levels and were 45% less likely to contract Covid.
It suggests that blacks might need a higher level of D than whites. Blacks with 40 ng/mL and higher had less risk than blacks with 30 to 39.9 ng/mL. But, 40 and higher didn't reduce the risk for whites.

I'm very skeptical. The Yahoo article doesn't help since it makes a race issue out of it. It blames racism.

Maybe if you are sick with covid, you actually try it and see how it works.

The cocktail of supplements commonly recommended for lessening the symptoms of covid:

Vitamin-C, Vitamin-D3, Zinc, Quercetin.

Supplements do not have to "cure" covid........just make things easier and maybe shorten
the duration.

There isnt complete consensus among the vit D people at grass roots health, but they do agree on minimum of 40ng/ml for prevention of most cancers. They dont break it down by ethnicity unfortunately.

This isn’t to say Vitamin D isn’t good for overall health, which is in turn, is good in the case that someone did get COVID.

But Vitamin D itself is not going to prevent you from getting COVID or even prevent you from having serious symptoms like some of you seem to think. Vitamin D is a small part of a bunch of different preventive measures that “together” would likely help you if you got a COVID infection. It alone is not a silver bullet. Sorry.......
Horsepucky.

Per the article:

"Increasing vitamin D levels in critically ill patients did not shorten their hospital stay or lower their odds of being moved to intensive care, needing mechanical ventilation, or dying, doctors in Brazil found. They randomly gave 240 patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19 either a single high dose of vitamin D3 or a placebo."

Vitamin D3 works as a preventative, not a cure. Nobody ever said high D3 levels will cure severe Covid illness. Having adequately high Vitamin D3 levels prior to infection prevents Covid from multiplying and taking hold It prevents the disease from becoming severe.

Idiotic study is idiotic.

Since I do not rely on Yahoo news for my information here is some links to MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE-BASED sources.

Below are a few of the more than 74 studies of Vitamin D and Covid published in PubMed (as of a few months ago) and elsewhere. with a brief synopsis. (some citations also include melatonin) Also google "scholar" is good to check altho I haven't gotten there yet.

Vitamin D deficiency aggravates COVID-19: systematic review ...
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov › ...
by M Pereira · Cited by 44 — Vitamin D deficiency was not associated with a higher chance of infection by COVID-19 (OR = 1.35; 95% CI = 0.80-1.88), but we identified that severe cases of COVID-19 present 64% (OR = 1.64; 95% CI = 1.30-2.09) more vitamin D deficiency compared with mild cases.

"Study finds over 80 percent of COVID-19 patients have vitamin D deficiency"

Oct 2020 - "Over 80 percent of 200 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Spain have vitamin D deficiency, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Vitamin D is a hormone the kidneys produce that controls blood calcium concentration and impacts the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a variety of health concerns, although research is still underway into why the hormone impacts other systems of the body. Many studies point to the beneficial effect of vitamin D on the immune system, especially regarding protection against infections."

interesting speculation that the role of melatonin in the skin of regulating Vit D intake, *may* explain the disproportionately high amount of Covid infection, hospitalization and death among Black and Latinx populations.

This is about a Vit D analog, called calcifediol.
"Effect of calcifediol treatment and best available therapy versus best available therapy on intensive care unit admission and mortality among patients hospitalized for COVID-19: A pilot randomized clinical study"
Objective: The vitamin D endocrine system may have a variety of actions on cells and tissues involved in COVID-19 progression especially by decreasing the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Calcifediol can rapidly increase serum 25OHD concentration. We therefore evaluated the effect of calcifediol treatment, on Intensive Care Unit Admission and Mortality rate among Spanish patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Conclusion: Our pilot study demonstrated that administration of a high dose of Calcifediol or 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a main metabolite of vitamin D endocrine system, significantly reduced the need for ICU treatment of patients requiring hospitalization due to proven COVID-19. Calcifediol seems to be able to reduce severity of the disease, but larger trials with groups properly matched will be required to show a definitive answer.

"Synergy of melanin and vitamin-D may play a fundamental role in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections and halt COVID-19 by inactivating furin protease
The host immunity is the only alternative to prevent and or reduce the infection and mortality rate as well.
Melanin mediated host immunity is proposed having potent biotechnological prospects in health care management of COVID-19.
Vitamin D is known to enhance the rate of melanin synthesis; and this may concurrently regulate the expression of furin expression"

International Journal of Molecular Medicine Jan 2021

Although the links between vitamin D status and the incidence and severity of COVID-19 remain elusive, several lines of emerging evidence suggest that vitamin D signaling, targeting several immune‑mediated pathways, may offer potential benefits at different stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Given that the vitamin D status is modulated by several intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including skin type (pigmentation), melanin polymers may also play a role in variable COVID‑19 outcomes among diverse population settings.
Moreover, apart from the well‑known limiting effects of melanin on the endogenous production of vitamin D, the potential crosstalk between the pigmentary and immune system may also require special attention concerning the current pandemic.
The present review article aimed to shed light on a range of mostly overlooked host factors, such as vitamin D status and melanin pigments, that may influence the course and outcome of COVID‑19.

In other words, elenrr:

If you are DEFICIENT in Vitamin D, then you are at a higher risk for any illness that requires a strong immune system, than if you have sufficient levels of it.

Therefore, if you get your levels up, you have a better chance of fighting off COVID-19 than someone who is deficient.

That's what ALL of that means.
