Supposedly, the water is "fine" to drink. Algae toxins in Syracuse water system: What we know so far (and what we don't) | syracuse.com

Also, I'm curious if this is literally "everywhere", as there was an article in the Toledo forum about algae in Lake Erie near that city/area.

I saw photos of that nasty bloom near Toledo. Its like swamp water.

Finger Lakes don't have much turnover. Its pretty stagnant as there isn't a huge inflow/outflow. So, you get a lot of runoff from surrounding farms and CAFOs and it has no where to go, kinda like a clogged sink. Although the area looks nice and is "natural" much of it is intensively used farmland/CAFOs.

There is some salt mining nearby as well.

There are some creeks/rivers and canals that flow in/out. So, I wonder if some of this came from waterways that flow into the Lakes. Some are mentioned here: http://www.lifeinthefingerlakes.com/...trout-streams/

These waterways are pretty small. They're all small creeks. The lakes are so massive, and the land surrounding them are higher in elevation without vast areas of forest- most of it is farmland. I'd say most of it is nitrogen runoff from fertilizer / animal wastes.
