It's been a while since I was in the apartment hunt, and I was just wondering what are the best/worst out there in the Syracuse area these days.

The only complex I've lived in here was Westminster Place in Liverpool. I personally hated it. It's not the worst complex, but I definitely steer people away from there based on all of the issues I have. It's definitely not the best complex either. Just my 2 cents

I've lived in apartments at Clayton Manor in Liverpool and the Meadows in Onondaga Hill, when it was called Westbrook Hills. Both were great. Some apartments I know of with bad/negative reputations that I know of are Springfield Gardens in DeWitt, some of the apartments in the Candlelight Lane area of Liverpool(Clay), Orchard Estates in Mattydale and some of the buildings on James between Downtown and Sedgwick. I think a part of that is due to those buildings accepting low income/Section 8 tenants and even having incidents from time to time.

Prior to moving out of the area, I lived at the Steeplechase Apartments at Weatheridge in Camillus. As someone who dislikes apartment living, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Steeplechase. The tenants are middle and upper middle class and consist of a nice mix of young professionals, middle-aged people, some grad/medical students and seniors that have downsized from their homes in the western suburbs. There weren't many kids, which was nice and a sign of a very desirable tenant mix. I have occasionally driven back to check up on the place when visiting town and the grounds, quality of the cars in the parking lot, and people walking about have not changed since I left. If I moved back to Syracuse and didn't purchase a house, I would definitely move back to Steeplechase. The rents for a 1 bedroom unit start at around $850 and pets are allowed for an additional fee. While rental rates are higher than the area average, I was more than willing to pay a higher cost for not dealing with a low income element that is found in some other apartment complexes.

Thanks for the info on Steeplechase - didn't realize they had gotten that expensive, in my mind I had them around $700.

When I lived at Steeplechase in 2006, the rents were $725 for a 1 bedroom on the ground floor and $765 for a 1 bedroom on the second floor which also included a fireplace. The current rental rate I quoted earlier was incorrect. The apartments start at $825 instead of $850. Sometimes the complex runs a promotion that includes the first month of rent free.

I would also look into Chicopee Mews which is an adjacent complex in Weatheridge. The rents there start at around $700 or $725, however dogs are not allowed. I also toured those apartments and liked them as well. The complex appears to be well managed.

High Acres on Onondaga Hill and many of the apartments in Radisson are nice. Cobblestone Square in Cicero is as well.

In the city I would avoid any apartment complexes on the near or mid north side but when you get further out - e.g.. Rugby Square and other places near Lyncourt - it's a different story.

Franklin Park Apartments in east Syracuse used to have a good reputation but I saw some negative reports here recently so that is one I'd be cautious about.

On the outer west end there are some decent looking complexes off Onondaga Blvd. past Wegmans but I have heard no feedback on them and have no clue if any are to be avoided.

There is a complex on valley drive north of Seneca Turnpike - used to be called American Townhomes or something of that sort. It looks "okay" but I've been told that it's not so great.

Over on the east side I'll make a blanket generalization and suggest that people avoid all the apartments and complexes that are on the hill running up off Erie Blvd. - all the way from Seeley Road at the western edge out to Thompson Rd. at the east with Mountainview Ave and the LeMoyne campus as the northern boundary. I'm sure there are some okay apartments in that zone but I've seen too many apartments and what appear to be tenants in that area that look a bit dodgy.

I know what you mean about those East side apartments. I believe the complex on Audubon Parkway is still really nice though.

There is a complex just south of Seneca Turnpike and west of Valley Drive that seems to be OK, but I'm not sure and forgot the name of it. There is another one on Onondaga near Velasko that is similar in that regard as well.
